What’s This Site About?
This site is about companies and organizations which are becoming “Enteprise 2.0″ organizations; those which are using Web 2.0 tools such as wikis, blogs, RSS, tagging, shared bookmarking, etc to achieve their objectives more productively.
Enteprise 2.0 is a term coined by Professor Andrew McAfee at Harvard Business School. The term is becoming more popular to describe organizations that are embracing Web 2.0 tools in an open and fully collaborative manner. While the tools are important, Enterprise 2.0 is really about a different and emerging business model that the tools are enabling.
While most or all companies may have at least some elements of Web 2.0 implemented now (knowingly or not), I try to target companies which have embraced it across their enterprise or have implemented tools for out-of-the-norm reasons or benefits.
Who Is It For?
I have found that many managers, directors, VPs and C-level enterprise leaders aren’t yet familiar with Web 2.0 / Enterprise 2.0 or the possible uses and advantages. For those readers I’m hoping that the specific examples included here show : (1) what and how Web 2.0 is being implemented in organizations and (2) that Enteprise 2.0 may offer companies significant competitive advantages.
Why?
As an IT director in a Fortune 100 enterprise this is really about my own research and learnings about Enteprise 2.0. I hope that this information is helpful to others in similar situations as myself.
The more I learn the more I see that there are significant efficiencies to be achieved with the open management and collaboration approach that these tools require. We’re at the leading edge of this phenomena and it’s incredibly interesting to me to see how they evolve and shape our business management and practices.
Why Not Create a Wiki or Use Cases2.com?
Great questions which I continue to ponder and consider. Please give me your feedback if you have it.
For those that aren’t familiar with Cases2.com, it is a wiki whose intent is to document Entperise 2.0 case studies. It was proposed by Andrew McAfee. It’s an objective that I fully support. I encourage you to check out the good information that is there.
My primary concerns with Cases2.com are (1) the site is hosted by the for-profit company SocialText which is one of the primary competitors in the E 2.0 market and (2) the cases2.com URL is displayed to users with the fully qualified socialtext.com domain. I applaud SocialText for offering the site and I have very little doubt that their intent is 100% honorable. However, I think it’s confusing to users and potentially creates a credibility issue. In addition, readers may assume (like I did) that those case studies encompass only those that use the SocialText product.
Where’s My Company?
If your business uses these tools and you would like to share your experience, I’d like to hear from you.
